Alec Dickson
Audio Engineer/Composer

Alec Dickson is a composer, synthesist, sound designer, and audio engineer. Born in Chicago, he completed his undergraduate degree at Elmhurst University in music theory and composition and went on to get his master’s degree in composition from DePaul University. He completed his DMA in composition at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, studying with Dr. Charles Norman Mason.

His compositional interests center around nature and human experience. Often, he will find ways to incorporate concepts taken from animals, plants, physics, and astrophysical phenomena into his works. He also is interested in kinetic embodiment and how we as humans experience music on a physical level. Recently, his compositional interests have turned towards whales. In his dissertation he explored strategies for converting recorded whale songs and calls into new music through spectral analysis and processing, supported by field research. While composing at home, his German Shepherd, Nymeria, provides nuanced feedback to help him refine his art.
