Alvin Phan
Saxophonist

Thanh (Alvin) Phan is a saxophonist from Houston, Texas, and a recent graduate of the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in Saxophone Performance under the mentorship of Retired Master Chief Dale Underwood.

Before fully entering academia and performance, Alvin served as an enlisted member of the United States Marine Forces Reserve Band in New Orleans, performing in ceremonies, concerts, and parades across the country. His love for band music continues through his work with community ensembles in the cities he has called home, including Houston, New Orleans, and Lubbock. He also performs with the Miami Pixel Symphony, a new orchestra dedicated to celebrating the music of video games and anime.

Alvin’s scholarship centers on the saxophone’s role in social and artistic commentary. His recent lecture recital, Political Statement Music for Saxophone, explored how music can advocate for animal welfare and environmental awareness. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Texas Tech University, and his teachers include David Dees, Steven Jones, Dale Underwood, Frederick L. Hemke, Dan Gelok, Valerie Vidal, and De’Marius Jackson.
